The design of Northwood Secondary school received recognition when it made the London finals for a Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Award. The council rebuilt and expanded the school at a cost of £35 million as part of its £314 million school building programme.

Northwood School was nominated for the strong partnership work between Hunters South Architects, the council, Farrans Construction and the Education Funding Agency, who delivered the three storey, 9,800sq m school in a challenging 15 months and within budget.

Tests have shown that the building is highly efficient, sustainable and exceptionally well constructed.

Officially opened last year, the school offers 1,080 school places and has an academic focus on performing arts. A stage area with retractable seating sits at the heart of the school, and additional arts facilities include an outdoor amphitheatre and performing arts specialist rooms.
