Hillingdon has once again topped the UK's list of Green Flag awards for its 50 parks and open spaces, 49 of which are maintained by the council.

The London borough received almost double the amount of any other in the capital; second-place Southwark was awarded 27 Green Flags. Nottingham was the second highest in the country with 40.

Awarded by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, a Green Flag signifies high standards and facility excellent in a park or open space within in the UK.

The total number of flags in Hillingdon increased by two this year, as the borough topped the list for the third year running, with Connaught Recreation Ground in Uxbridge and Eastcote War Memorial in Ruislip achieving the status on 16 July.

Jonathan Bianco, Hillingdon Council's cabinet member for finance, property and business services, said: "After winning a gold medal at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show a little over a week ago, we're delighted to receive yet another commendation for our parks and green spaces in Hillingdon.

"Green Flags are the highest honour a park can receive and they require a great deal of time and hard work to achieve. We have more than 200 green spaces across the borough and I would like to thank all the community groups, volunteers and council staff who continue to keep our borough looking so welcoming and attractive."
